The Team & Role

The primary objective of the Clinical Coding Trainer/Educator role is to facilitate the training of new coders. This role supports the coding team by ensuring Health Information Managers (HIMs) and Clinical Coders receive up-to-date guidance on disease and procedure classification in accordance with Commonwealth and State directives. The incumbent is responsible for providing coded patient data, participating in quality improvement activities within the coding service, and maintaining professional relationships within Peninsula Health. This position operates Monday to Friday during business hours and includes both onsite and remote responsibilities.

Skills & Experience Required

Essential

  • Possess specialised knowledge in and work in an area of their profession (clinical, educational, research and/or managerial) recognised as requiring high levels of specialist knowledge
  • Excellent knowledge of clinical coding principals and standards of the National Funding Model
  • Excellent knowledge and interpretation of current Australian Coding Standards
  • Understanding of Department of Health (DH) data reporting requirements, such as VAED.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • High proficiency in clinical coding and experience with the current edition of ICD-10-AM.
  • Proficiency in DH Criteria for Reporting
  • Bachelor of Health Information Management or equivalent
  • Relevant technical skills applicable to clinical coding services
  • Demonstrated commitment to achieving high-quality outcomes
  • Ability to prioritise tasks and manage workload effectively and efficiently
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a large team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to resolve conflicts.
  • Knowledge of legislation, policies, and standards relevant to Health Information Services
  • Familiarity with medical record systems, including computer systems – IPM, iMedX and Cerner
  • Proficiency in Windows applications.
  • Ability to tailor training to individual trainee requirements

Desirable

  • Coding Training/Education/Auditing experience
  • Applicants may be subject to a coding quality assessment prior to appointment
