Bayside Health was formed following the merger of Alfred Health, Bass Coast Health, Gippsland Southern Health Service, Kooweerup Regional Health Service and Peninsula Health on 1 January 2026.
The Team & Role
This fellowship aims to expose a recently graduated orthopaedic surgeon to a broad aspect of lower limb arthroplasty including difficult primary and revision hip and knee replacement surgery. The surgery offered will be varied by the techniques and experience of the fellowship supervisors who all bring their own perspectives on management of common and uncommon orthopaedic problems and dilemmas.
Exposure to different techniques including robotically assisted hip and knee arthroplasty (including partial arthroplasty), patient specific assisted arthroplasty, anterior approach hip replacements and sports surgery including all aspects of ligament reconstruction. The fellow will be encouraged to bring any clinical questions they may have and explore these questions with the fellowship supervisors and senior clinicians within the Unit.
The fellow will initially be supervised in most aspects of their work and then as they gain experience and confidence, they will be given curated lists with a varied case mix of primary hip and knee arthroplasty and basic arthroscopic surgery. A senior supervising surgeon will always be available for advice, guidance and assistance and will ultimately be responsible for patient care.
The fellow will attend clinics as per the schedule outlined and will supervise junior members within the team and give advice in their role as a peri-consultant orthopaedic surgeon. They will be exposed to a broad case mix of new patients and follow up patients reflective of general orthopaedic practice.
Protected time will be given as per the schedule for self-directed learning and the opportunity to engage in a research project under direction of the Peninsula Health Research Supervisor. This would be hoped to be an area relevant to this fellowship. At the conclusion of the fellowship the fellow will be expected to have completed minimum a self-reflection statement which outlines how the fellowship has contributed to their growth as an orthopaedic surgeon.
