Peninsula Health is the major metropolitan health service for Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula. We care for a population of 300,000 people, across the life continuum from obstetrics, paediatrics, emergency medicine, intensive care, critical care, surgical and general medicine, rehabilitation, and oncology, through to aged care and palliative care. We also provide extensive services in community health, health education and promotion, ambulatory care, and mental health.
Peninsula Health delivers surgical services to public patients at two sites: Frankston Hospital and Peninsula Health Surgical Centre. Frankston Hospital will move to a new 12 story building complex in January 2026. The new complex has three new surgical wards and a new operating room complex with 15 operating rooms, including two dedicated Emergency Theatres and an interventional Vascular suite. Peninsula Health also provides care at Frankston Public Surgical Centre through five operating rooms, including one endoscopy theatre.
The General Surgery department at Peninsula Health has three subspecialty units (upper GI, colorectal & breast/endocrine) and an acute general surgery unit. The successful candidate will have a home in one of the subspecialty unit and an active role in the AGSU. Peninsula Health also has surgical units in Orthopaedics, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Gynaecology & Obstetrics, Thoracic Surgery, Ear Nose & Throat Surgery, FacioMaxilliary Surgery and Urology.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist the Director of Surgery and Deputy Director of Surgery with the following tasks:
- the management of emergency and elective demand
- Collate and present a biannual General Surgery audit
- Facilitate General Surgery Morbidity & Mortality Meetings
- monitoring and maintenance of standards of medical practice within General Surgery
- Facilitate and participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, training and research.
- Actively supervise registrars and other junior medical staff and provide feedback and perform appraisals
- Role model fair and courteous behavior in your interactions with all staff and customers
- Develop and build relationships, foster spirit of co-operation and trust in all dealings with other Departments
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
• MBBS degree (or equivalent)
• Successful completion of FRACS 2nd part exam / FRACS (or equivalent)
• Eligible for registration with AHPRA as a medical practitioner
• Sound clinical knowledge, skills and experience in contemporary medical and evidence based practice
• Commitment to excellence in patient care
• Demonstrated initiative and self-direction
