Bayside Health was formed following the merger of Alfred Health, Bass Coast Health, Gippsland Southern Health Service, Kooweerup Regional Health Service and Peninsula Health on 1 January 2026.
The Team & Role
The General Surgery Fellow will assume a supervised and supported, general surgery consultant role.
The role has been created to transition recently qualified surgeons to independent practice as a general surgeon.
Peninsula Care Group delivers surgical services to public patients at two sites: Peninsula University Hospital and Frankston Public Surgical Centre. Opened in January 2026, the new Peninsula University Hospital tower has 16 operating rooms. Frankston Public Surgical Centre has an additional 5 operating rooms.
In addition to three specialty general surgery units the Peninsula Care Group also has surgical units in Orthopaedics, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Gynaecology & Obstetrics, Thoracic Surgery, Ear Nose & Throat Surgery, FacioMaxilliary Surgery and Urology.
The General Surgery Fellow is supported by 16 General Surgeons. The Fellow has access to regular theatre time, with both elective and emergency lists, and outpatient clinics. In addition to their role in the Acute General Surgery Unit, the fellow will be aligned with one of the three subspecialty general surgery units to attend that unit’s clinics and complex surgical cases. The Fellow has the opportunity to participate in the on call roster, always with a consultant rostered as back-up. In addition to the clinical activities, the fellow has the following roles:
- Assist the Director of Surgery and Deputy Director of Surgery with the following tasks:
- the management of emergency and elective demand
- Collate and present a biannual General Surgery audit
- Facilitate General Surgery Morbidity & Mortality Meetings
- monitoring and maintenance of standards of medical practice within General Surgery
- Facilitate and participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, training and research.
- Actively supervise registrars and other junior medical staff and provide feedback and perform appraisals
- Role model fair and courteous behaviour in your interactions with all staff and customers
- Develop and build relationships, foster spirit of co-operation and trust in all dealings with other Departments

Skills & Experience Required
- MBBS degree (or equivalent)
- Successful completion of FRACS 2nd part exam / FRACS (or equivalent)
- Eligible for registration with AHPRA as a medical practitioner
- Sound clinical knowledge, skills and experience in contemporary medical and evidence-based practice
- Commitment to excellence in patient care
- Demonstrated initiative and self-direction
- Sound clinical knowledge, skills and experience in this specialty field
