The Team & Role
Our Maternity Services has recently undergone new redevelopment with the completion of new purpose-built birthing suites, post-natal ward and a new Special Care Nursery. Special Care Nursery located at Peninsula University Hospital is a Level 4 service that delivers high quality patient care with a focus on family centred care. Averaging over 500 admissions a year we have 12 cots but have the ability to flex up to meet patient demand.
As a Level 4 SCN we can provide care for neonates from 32 weeks gestation; deliver respiratory support(CPAP/high flow); accept any emergency admissions from birth suite/theatre with the expectation that we can assess, stabilise and manage neonates on SCN or until they can be retrieved by PIPER to a tertiary hospital. With admissions from birth suite, theatre, postnatal ward together with back transfers from tertiary units our focus is the emergency and ongoing care of premature neonates; common neonatal conditions and feeding support for babies and breastfeeding guidance for mothers. All new staff will be orientated and supported by our experienced SCN team and clinical neonatal educator to gain skills and competence to deal with both emergency and routine admissions to the unit.
