The Team & Role

The IBD Clinical Nurse Consultant is a senior nursing role that provides expert care and coordination for patients living with inflammatory bowel disease. This position involves advanced clinical assessment, development of individualised care plans, and management of complex therapies such as biologic infusions. Acting as a key resource within the multidisciplinary team, the CNC ensures continuity of care across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings, while supporting early intervention and reducing hospital admissions. The role also includes patient education, advocacy, and the provision of rapid-access services to improve health outcomes and quality of life.

In addition to direct patient care, the CNC leads service development initiatives, mentors nursing staff, and plays an important role in clinical governance and quality improvement. A significant component of this role involves contributing to and supporting research activities, including clinical audits, service evaluations, and ethically approved research and trial participation. The CNC assists with data collection, interpretation, and reporting to inform evidence-based practice and supports the translation of emerging research findings into clinical care pathways. Through active involvement in research and evaluation, the CNC helps to advance the evidence base for IBD nursing and contribute to improved models of care.
