Bayside Health was formed following the merger of Alfred Health, Bass Coast Health, Gippsland Southern Health Service, Kooweerup Regional Health Service and Peninsula Health on 1 January 2026.

The Team & Role

The Mental Health/Alcohol and other Drug (MH/AOD) Nurse Practitioner will integrate into the Mental Health Consultation Liaison Service. This service provides advice and secondary consultation
for consumers across all Bayside Health’s inpatient services who present with mental health and substance use and/or addiction problems. The service provides:

  • Timely and comprehensive assessment, diagnosis and treatment
  • Integrated treatment, care and support for people with co-occurring needs
  • Medical and nursing management of alcohol or drug withdrawal
  • Management advice and support for consumers with change of behaviour
  • Brief intervention/consumer education on the effects of substance abuse
  • Build capacity of the multi-disciplinary team to provide integrated treatment, care and support in the community for persons presenting with co-occurring mental illness and substance uses or addiction
  • Advice on discharge planning to support the referral pathways and collaborative practices between primary care, local services and area mental health and AOD services; as well as NDIS and aged care services

The MH/AOD Nurse Practitioner (NP) aims to enhance the quality of care for consumers presenting in an inpatient settings with mental health and AOD issues through the provision of direct clinical care,
timely advice and secondary consultation to other staff.

Skills & Experience Required

  • Registered Nurse with current registration with Australian Health Professionals Regulation
    Agency (AHPRA)
  • Masters of Nursing (Nurse Practitioner) with relevant unrestricted AHPRA notation as a Nurse
    Practitioner
  • Current Prescriber Number
  • Extensive AOD and/or mental health experience in hospital/community settings
  • Demonstrated commitment to delivering high quality outcomes for consumers
  • Ability to work as and effectively guide where required, multidisciplinary team
  • Competently use computer applications
  • Prepares written documentation using clear, concise and grammatically correct language
  • Communicates effectively with and relates to Consumers from a wide range of cultures and
    backgrounds.
